"DETECTIVES WERE ABLE TO PARK THIS VEHICLE FOR UP TO 12 HOURS AND WIRELESSLY MONITOR ANY LOCATION, UTILIZING 4G LTE TECHNOLOGY AND THE WAYNE STATE VPN. THIS PROVIDED AN EXTRA LEVEL OF SECURITY FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT AS THEY DID NOT PHYSICALLY FACE HARM DURING A STING OR SURVEILLANCE OPERATION.
Located in Detroit, Wayne State University is a nationally recognized research institution with an enrollment of more than 32,000 students. With over 100 academic buildings and over 200 acres in the mid-town area of the City of Detroit, there were many security challenges faced by Wayne State and their police department.
In 2009, WSU entered into a strategic partnership with SVT to provide campus-wide surveillance to protect the students and faculty on and around campus.
SVT was requested to provide six (6) cameras in remote locations throughout campus as well as upgrade the WSU Police Dispatch building. By working with University and Facilities Management, SVT overcame the obstacles of mounting an exterior camera over 100 feet up on the corner of the Old Main Building, which was built in 1894. Due to Old Main being a historic building, custom mounting was required for this camera.
SVT was tasked with creating a highly unique mount to allow easy access for service and provide minimal impact on the building. SVT was able to create a mount that had six pivot points to allow for safe, low cost service of the camera. The mount was then powder coated to color match the 118 year old building. That year, SVT was also granted the contract to upgrade the campus to a new NICE Systems recording platform which became the standard for the University in 2009.
In 2011, SVT was tasked with a design-build project of integrating a hidden surveillance system into a vehicle for remote surveillance and stakeout of the surrounding campus and Mid-Town Detroit community. SVT custom-designed the housings and installed an eight camera system on the vehicle with the cameras hidden inside of a concealed space. All cameras were set up to store their video on a recording system onboard the vehicle.
Detectives were able to park this vehicle for up to 12 hours and wirelessly monitor any location, utilizing 4G LTE technology and the Wayne State VPN. This provided an extra level of security for law enforcement as they did not physically face harm during a sting or surveillance operation.
In 2011, SVT was tasked with providing a new video wall to allow for surveillance monitoring. A 126" diagonal video wall was implemented using NEC displays and Creston control. Any camera from the campus can be instantly viewed inside of the dispatch office at the WSU Police Department.
SVT also installed Axis HD PTZ cameras on top of the security blue lights throughout campus. Wayne State utilized these cameras for a pilot project, allowing for direct line of sight video coverage of the campus below the thick tree canopy.
Today, SVT provides on-site service and support through our Managed Care solution. With more projects already in the planning stages, SVT and Wayne State's partnership will continue to grow in the future.
